We have purchased our tickets and we have reservations at a compound in Kigali Rwanda. It is official - I will be leading a mission there this summer.
Last summer, when I was in Rwanda, I made a very good friend - Anastase. At one point, he had me over to his home for dinner. I was able to meet his wonderful children. They kept bringing us their English text books and asking us to read any two paragraphs together. They seemed hungry for a story. So, I asked Anastase if they had story books. He didn't seem to even know what I was referring to.
So, I brought it up to the head of the ministry there - Joseph. I asked him if they have story books in Rwanda. He said the problem is that they are becoming anglaphone and literate. The children read and speak fluent English in the cities while the elders are still in villages telling stories in Kinyarwanda. So, they are losing their stories.
I - being a problem solver - suggested that someone should make English stories out of the indigenous stories. Joseph's response was "Great. Come back next summer and do it."
So, here we are - ready to go. We have a semi-professional author and a professional illustrator as well as three others. We will have the extravagant blessing of listening to the stories of Rwanda and recording them.
We will also be visiting prisons and hospitals - especially praying with HIV/AIDS victims. We will speak at a college or two and also help to create children's biblical reconciliation materials...all in a month :)
We appreciate your prayers - and if you should be interested in financial support, please send email to becky[at]apostleschurch[dot]org
Blessings - and there will be more to come!
